Science faculty and Nobel laureates were among the voices highlighted during Chancellor Dennis Assanis’ inauguration events
Discovery-driven research and public-impact science were central themes during universitywide events marking Chancellor Dennis Assanis’ inauguration as UC Santa Barbara’s sixth chancellor.
The inauguration program highlighted the university’s research mission and its role in advancing scientific leadership. Nobel laureate David Gross was recognized during the ceremony, connecting the milestone event to Santa Barbara’s distinguished legacy in theoretical physics and foundational discovery.
Science faculty were also part of the inauguration symposium. David Weld, professor of physics, discussed quantum mechanics and experimental science, including examples related to superconductors and interference. Denise Montell, Duggan Professor and distinguished professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology, spoke about biomedical innovation, including “RaceCAR” therapy.
For the Sciences, the program underscored how fundamental discovery, experimental research and biomedical innovation contribute to the university’s public mission. Read the full story on The Current.
