Environmental Studies undergrads Sophia Long and Virginia Such partner with the A.S. Bike Shop to divert bike tires from landfills

Second-year Environmental Studies majors Sophia Long and Virginia Such have launched TREAD (Tire Recovery Education and Diversion) to tackle the waste generated by the bicycle industry. Supported by the Environmental Leadership Incubator (ELI), the students partnered with A.S. Bike Shop Manager Adam Jahnke to implement a sustainable recycling solution for the thousands of old tires previously destined for local landfills.

"The bicycle industry creates so much waste, and it’s a circle I’ve been trying to square for a decade," Jahnke said. "Their program is really such a breath of fresh air." As shop mechanics swap out old tires, they are now boxed up and processed into fuel for industrial kilns and crumb rubber for playgrounds. Read the full story on The Current.
